Improving Google in Filipino

My pet peeve with Google is the awkward and sometimes silly Filipino version of its website. "Preferences," for example, is literally translated to "Mga Kagustuhan" which sounds more like "Your wish is my command." :)

I was also frustrated when they first translated the "I'm feeling lucky" button to "May kutob ako" -- which was not the real sense of that button.

To translate this idiomatic command, we first need to understand what the button does. In case you didn't know: you click the "I'm feeling lucky" button if you trust Google enough. If you click it, Google jumps you to the first result in the search, instead of displaying a page of results.

Pinoy Programmer Students Wanted: Google Summer of Code 2007

One of the biggest and much-awaited events for the open source community is the Google Summer of Code 2007 (SoC).

What is Soc? Let me give the fastest answers.

Answer 1: It's a scholarship fest. Google sponsors a student from anywhere in the world to contribute code to an open source project. This could be any open source software (OSS) project, so long as it's on Google's shortlist of OSS projects (eg, Apache, Drupal, etc).

Attack of the fiesta pox

On the day I was supposed to graduate, chicken pox kept me in bed. But that didn’t stop my family from throwing a party.

Father flew back from Saudi. Carpenters came for house repairs. Three cooks were hired and a grand feast was designed.

“Can’t we just postpone it for when I’m feeling better?” I asked my parents.

“We suffered to get you educated,” my mother said. “Now we celebrate. Get back to bed,” she added and went back to listing the dishes they wanted to cook.

Borges, maps and videotape

Cheap, portable and easy to use – this is the future of videotaping. The technology and art of videotaping will be so accessible and portable that we will be recording our lives not only with one camera, but a whole bunch of them.

The word “tape” is destined to become anachronistic, since magnetic tape is slowly being replaced by media cards and discs. Cameras will be implanted in our bodies and record directly to artificial neurons implanted in our brains. Of course these cameras will even be implanted in the bodies of our families and friends, too.

Comment Chopsuey

Salamat! I've received lots of comments via email and some of these people are just too busy to have the patience to post a comment on the site. *hint!* ;-)

So I've rounded up some of these comments and have decided to post them in one page. Here they are!

Heroes

Now watching: Heroes, a new excellent TV series that is getting a steady following among geeks. I like it because it's about comicbook heroes with mutant powers, but told with a more realist touch.
